Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Linux Edition Overview
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Linux Edition enables you to restore complete Linux systems, volumes or individual files/folders in minutes to dramatically minimize downtime and disruption to your business. It provides image level backup of Linux system volumes through a command-line interface, including backup of system volumes, configurable compression and encryption.
It is the perfect standalone solution for small business customers with 1 – 4 Windows servers and can scale to larger Windows environments as well, working in conjunction with Symantec Backup Exec™.
Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 captures a recovery point of the entire live Windows system. Included is the OS, applications, system settings, configurations, files, and so forth without impacting productivity. The recovery point can be conveniently saved to various media or disk storage devices including SAN, NAS, Direct Attached Storage, RAID, Blu-ray/DVD/CD, and so forth. When systems fail, you can quickly restore them without the need for manual, lengthy, and error prone processes.

RAM
The following are the memory requirements for SUSE Linux, Red Hat Linux, and the Symantec Recovery Disk:
- SUSE Linux: 256 MB
- Red Hat Linux: 256 MB
- Symantec Recovery Disk: 1 GB minimum (dedicated)
- If you create a Symantec Recovery Disk, 512 MB minimum (dedicated) is required
Available hard disk space
The Backup Exec System Recovery for Linux installation requires 30 MB of disk space. If you intend to install and use the option for extracting and creating a Symantec Recovery Disk, you should have at least 200 MB of disk space. You should have sufficient hard disk space on a local hard disk or network server for storing recovery points. Be aware that the file sizes of resulting recovery points are affected by the amount of data that you intend to back up.
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
The drive can be any speed, but it must be capable of being used as the startup drive from the BIOS.
Software
- The mount.v2i option uses Lib fuse (32-bit version). Currently, only Fuse 2.7.x is supported. Other versions of Fuse are not supported, but may work
- createSRD uses the squashfs-tools package on RHEL for creating RHEL Symantec Recovery Disks. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server requires mkcramfs, which is installed by default

The following must be installed on the computer on which you want to install Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Solution:
- 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, Enterprise Edition, or Standard Edition
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (must be installed before you can install Symantec Installation Manager).
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is included on the Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Solution media. Symantec recommends that you install Microsoft SQL Server on a computer separate from the one on which you install Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Management Solution.
